It would be great to have the ability to turn off ticketing so that the lanbding page just had registraton fields and then when an online attendee registers, they are taken to the play page.

Do you mean to streamline the sign-up process so that attendees don't have to physically select or choose a ticket? If so, that's already how things work if all you have is just one single ticket set up for your event. For example, if you just have the default free ticket set up for the event, then we won't ask attendees to select that ticket when they register.
In effect, they'll be unaware that there's a ticket, apart from the fact that the summary sidebar in the checkout will indicate that they have been pre-allocated free access or whatever you call that ticket. In that sense, you can absolutely create a scenario where you're simply asking for registration questions and that's it. I hope that helps.
